Why Marvel Star Chris Hemsworth Plans to Take a Hiatus From Acting
By Movieguide® Contributor
After learning that he is at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease, THOR star Chris Hemsworth has announced that he will take on fewer acting roles so he can reprioritize his life.
The Marvel star learned that he carries the APOE4 gene while filming LIMITLESS, a National Geographic and Disney+ docuseries he hosted last year. This gene makes him 8 to 10 times more likely to develop the neurodegenerative disorder.
Ahead of the release of EXTRACTION 2, Hemsworth hinted at taking less roles.
Fans showered their support on the actor, noting that they are praying for Hemsworth.
“Stay healthy Chris! We love you, you’re such a great actor and if it’s true you are taking a break from acting, we support you because your health comes first,” one fan wrote on Instagram.
Another wrote, “Take care of your health Sir. We’re all praying for you. Love you 3000.”
“Doing and episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, ‘Oh, God, I’m not ready to go yet,” Hemsworth said last November. “I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude.”
“And then you start talking about kids and family and going, ‘Oh, my God, they’re getting older, they’re growing up and I keep slapping another movie on top of another movie,” he continued. “Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of the house, and I missed the window.”
Hemsworth still plans to complete the projects he is already signed onto such as an untitled Hulk Hogan biopic and another return to the Marvel universe as Thor in an upcoming Avengers sequel. After completing these projects, he will take a chunk of time off to be with his family.
“Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death,” he said. “Then all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality.”
The actor had already been planning to take some time off for the sake of his family, but the genetic testing he went through “triggered something” in him causing the hiatus to come sooner rather than later.
Hemsworth has clarified that he is “not talking about retiring by any means,” rather he just wants to “go home and… have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, [and] be with [his] wife.”
