King Charles’s Christmas Day Address Breaks Viewing Records

By Movieguide® Staff

King Charles’s Christmas address on BBC became the most watched holiday broadcast on record.

Over 10 million viewers tuned into the monarch’s broadcast, which aired on BBC One, BBC Two, and ITV.

According to The Guardian, 8.1 million viewers watched the broadcast on BBC One, while 1.58 million watched the program on ITV, with 929,000 viewing it on BBC Two.

Charles gave the address to the nation from the historic St George’s chapel at Windsor Castle, where the late Queen Elizabeth gave her Christmas message in 1999.

The Guardian reported:

In the eight-minute message, Charles paid tribute to his mother and addressed the cost of living crisis gripping the nation, alongside footage of food banks and meals being distributed to the needy…

Seven of the top 10 most-watched shows on Christmas Day were broadcast by the BBC – the other three were broadcast by ITV – with the corporation claiming a Christmas Day triumph over streaming rivals including Netflix.

“In a time of so much competition and choice, the BBC continues to be the UK’s entertainment destination on Christmas Day,” Charlotte Moore, CCO at the BBC said of the viewing numbers.

Movieguide® previously reported on Queen Elizabeth’s previous Christmas addresses:

According to The Washington Post, a 21-year-old Elizabeth said: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service, and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

Four short years later, she became Queen of England. After 70 years as the monarch of Britain, Queen Elizabeth became known for her pious leadership and humble faith in God’s word; a commitment she made clear would mark her reign in her first Christmas Address in 1952.

“I want to ask you all, whatever your religion may be, to pray for me on that day, to pray that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.”

In 2002, the Queen extolled the words of Christ: “For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life. I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ’s words and example.”
