Tom Cruise’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 Pushed to 2025

By Movieguide® Contributor

As the actors’ strike continues, Paramount has reworked the timeline for its major releases, pushing the next installment in Tom Cruise’s MISSION IMPOSSIBLE franchise to 2025.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING – PART ONE, released in July of this year, was meant to be quickly followed by its sequel, DEAD RECKONING – PART TWO, only a year later. However, the actors’ strike has left the cast unable to work on the movie, making a July 2024 release impossible.

It is now slated for May 23, 2025.

With the delayed release date, producers have decided to rename the movie, dropping the DEAD RECKONING title for a different, yet-to-be-released name. The plot, however, is expected to play out as originally planned, picking up where the first movie left off.

This is good news for Christian audiences, as the first movie promoted a strong Christian worldview, which the next movie will likely follow. Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE tells a gripping story of good versus evil. It’s a superlative, high-stakes spy thriller with explosive action, gripping suspense and great characters. DEAD RECKONING PART ONE has a strong allegorical Christian worldview, with the theme that, “The Cross of Christ holds the key to destroy evil.” However, the movie has lots of strong action violence and some foul language, including four strong profanities. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for teenagers and adults.

While this is not the first delay caused by the actors’ strike, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8’s postponed release is significant. Other movies originally scheduled for this year waited to release because the actors couldn’t promote it. This delay is because the movie won’t be ready in time as the actors cannot work.

More delays of this nature are likely to emerge soon if the actors’ strike cannot be resolved.

Paramount also announced A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE has been delayed to June 2024, and an untitled SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS movie has been pushed from May to December 2025.

Movieguide® previously reported on strike-related delays:

Warner Bros. has pushed back the release date of DUNE: PART TWO due to the ongoing actors’ strike.

Originally slated to release this November, the movie is now set to release on March 15, 2024.

The delayed release date comes from the studio’s desire to capitalize on the big-name actors starring in the movie. As long as the SAG strike continues, actors cannot promote their movies or attend the premiere.
