For KING & COUNTRY’s Luke Smallbone Encourages People To ‘Be Extraordinary’
By Movieguide® Contributor
For KING & COUNTRY’s Luke Smallbone is encouraging people to harness their creativity for God’s glory.
“My competition in art isn’t necessarily the Christian sphere,” Smallbone said during an interview with Carley Boyette. “If I want to make a mark for Jesus, I’ve got to compete with Bruno Mars. I’ve got to compete with Taylor Swift. That’s the standard.”
He explained that, for him, his music has to hit that standard because “people might look at my God and say He’s less than. And I don’t want that.”
“With the creativity and the things God has given me, I want people to look at Him and say, ‘How extraordinary. I might not necessarily think the way you think, but you’ve got me thinking because I’m impressed by x,y,z.”
Smallbone then addressed listeners: “Don’t settle for doing the least amount possible to get by or keep your job. Be the best. Be extraordinary. Not for your glory, but for someone else’s.”
Smallbone and his brother Joel just released their latest album, “What Are We Waiting For?”
“The statement of ‘What are we waiting for’ was meaningful to us because that’s what we’re asking ourselves,” he told PEOPLE. “What are we waiting for in how we care for our wives, and what are we waiting for when it comes to raising our children? How are we caring for each other? You can’t just keep saying to yourself, ‘Well, maybe tomorrow. Maybe next week.’ We should do it now.”
In an Instagram post announcing the album, the brothers wrote, “When you announce an album, you’re announcing a new era. In some cases that era lasts for a year and a half to two years, & as artists, you realize in that time there’s going to be new iterations that come about.”
“We feel that this is the culmination point of the last 2 years. It’s the ultimate version of the record, & we’re thrilled to finally hand it over to you,” they continued.
Movieguide® previously reported on the “What Are We Waiting For?” music video:
For KING + COUNTRY released the music video for the title track of their upcoming album, “What Are We Waiting For?” last week and shared how a team member inspired its production.
As production was wrapping, their head of socials and creative felt that the headline song “What Are We Waiting For?” was unfinished, People reported.
“He said, ‘Look, this is the culmination of the album,” Joel Smallbone told People. “This is the title track. The whole album is built around a desert theme. A monologue in the liners reads about how you’ve been living in a no man’s land. It’s this whole allegory,” and yet the song didn’t have a music video.
The music video brings this message to life as Luke, Joel and the rest of the band fight to keep their footing and move forward as the sands tries to pull them back down.
The group hopes the video will help their message and inspire more people to take hold of their life rather than let it slip away.
“It’s this moment of, ‘There’s gotta be more to life,’” Luke said. “And you go through the storm, and you go through the night, and you get to the other side. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find an oasis.”
