YOUNG SHELDON, REACHER, PERCY JACKSON Top Nielsen Streaming List
By Movieguide® Contributor
Family-friendly shows and moral content are topping Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the last week of 2023.
YOUNG SHELDON took the overall No. 1 spot, with 1.31 billion minutes viewed across Netflix and Max. BLUEY came in at No. 2, with 1.11 billion minutes and THE CROWN took third, with 1.04 billion minutes.
Nielsen also listed the most-streamed original series, with THE CROWN topping the charts (1.04 billion minutes), and Amazon Prime’s REACHER and Disney+’s PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS rounding out the Top 3, with 943 million and 700 million minutes viewed, respectively.
A portion of the Movieguide® review for the first two episodes of PERCY JACKSON reads:
Based on the popular children’s book series, the first two episodes of PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS leave a positive first impression. The characters, comedy and cinematography are well done. The series stresses redemptive, moral values of bravery, self-sacrifice, and staying loyal to one’s friends. On the flipside, episodes celebrate Greek mythology and several pagan rituals from Ancient Greece. For example, characters offer food and prayers to Olympian gods. Lastly, the action scenes contain intense sword combat, monsters getting stabbed, and certain figures disintegrating into dust. There is no blood, but the violence pushes the limits of a TV-PG rating. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for children and teenagers.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that REACHER’s numbers should have been higher, but a technical glitch interfered with data collection.
“Revised figures will be out in early February and will likely put Reacher over the 1 billion minute threshold for the third consecutive week; the 943 million minutes reflects viewing for the 11 episodes of the series released before Dec. 20,” the outlet reported.
A portion of the Movieguide® review for REACHER 2.2. “What Happens In Atlantic City” reads:
Episode Two of REACHER: Season Two is well produced and acted, with some good dialogue and a thrilling showdown in the final act. It has a strong positive worldview about seeking justice and fighting government corruption and waste. There’s a positive song about Jesus in the beginning. However, Episode Two of RECAHER: Season Two has strong foul language, violence, a bedroom scene, and frequent alcohol use. So, MOVIEGUDIE® advises extreme caution.
REACHER 2.5 “Burial” has been nominated for a Movieguide® award. Part of the review reads:
Episode Five of REACHER: Season Two is an exciting, slam-bang episode. Season Two is one of the more gripping action series available on the major streaming outlets. Best of all, Episode Five has strong Christian, pro-family, patriotic values and overt references to resurrection and eternal life through Jesus. The best scenes, which are extremely moving and uplifting, are smack dab in the middle of Episode Five. However, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution because of strong foul language and intense violence involving ruthless, murderous terrorists in Episode Five of REACHER: Season Two.
The Hollywood Reporter also made sure to clarify that these numbers only apply to content streamed on TVs and not computers or phones and that they only measure U.S. audiences.
2023 saw many streaming services increase their subscriber numbers, whether that was through partnering with other streamers or offering new plans.
Digital Trends reported that Netflix was the No. 1 most popular service (260.28 million) of 2023. Amazon Prime came in second, with around 200 million (the ability to watch Amazon Prime content without subscribing makes it hard to pin down a specific number), and Disney+ took the No. 3 spot, with 150.2 million.
