Chris Evans Calls THE WINTER SOLDIER His Favorite Marvel Movie

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor Chris Evans says THE WINTER SOLDIER, the second movie in the CAPTAIN AMERICA franchise, is his favorite Marvel project.

“It’s my personal favorite Marvel movie that I was a part of. It’s not just for the movie itself but the experience,” Evans said at Emerald City Con 2024. “The first film, I was so nervous. You know what you’re stepping into and as a result, you’re playing defense, and you’re playing not to lose.”

“When WINTER SOLDIER came around, we were playing to win. And it’s the first movie with the Russo Brothers. We were taking more risks, and the character felt more fleshed out. It was one of the more satisfying experiences I’ve had in my Marvel run,” he continued.

THE WINTER SOLDIER’s redemptive message hit home with American audiences. It ranked second place for the Ten Best Movies for Mature Audiences at the 2015 Movieguide® Awards and was also nominated for the Movieguide® Faith and Freedom Award.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, a mysterious assassin called “the Winter Soldier” critically wounds Nick Fury, Captain America’s boss at SHIELD. Fury hands Captain America a flash drive showing SHIELD is compromised. “Don’t trust anyone,” Fury tells Cap before losing consciousness. Using the flash drive, Cap learns a secret cabal has infiltrated SHIELD. They also control the Winter Soldier. Ultimately, they plan to use newly developed SHIELD technology to rule the world. Now, Captain America and the two friends he trusts must avoid not only the Winter Soldier, but all of SHIELD, so they can stop this evil plot.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is a terrific action movie. It hits all the right plot points and adds some nifty twists. Once again, Chris Evans does a superb job as the iconic hero. The supporting players are also excellent. Happily, THE WINTER SOLIDER has a strong Christian, redemptive, moral, patriotic worldview with an overt baptism and other Christian symbolism. Captain America and his friends are protecting both American liberty and world freedom. THE WINTER SOLDIER warrants caution, however, for intense action violence and brief foul language.

Clutch Points noted that Evans also had other superhero roles, such as Johnny Storm in THE FANTASTIC FOUR, Casey Jones in the 2007 TMNT movie, and villain Lucas Lee in SCOTT PILGRAM VS. THE WORLD. But none of these roles hold the same place in his heart as Captain America.

“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply,” Evans said. “He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories to tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it…it’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way. I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and, in a way, it really landed so well.”

Variety reported his comments about returning to the role: “As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people, it doesn’t quite feel right right now.”

Evans previously revealed that certain conditions would need to be met for him to return to his role as Captain America. The return can’t be too soon, and everything would have to be “perfect” in order not to tarnish Steve Roger’s character.
