New Falcons Starting QB Gives ‘Glory to God’ for First NFL Start

The Atlanta Falcons called backup quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to the starting position before the team’s game against the New York Giants.

Per ESPN, “Penix, 24, was ninth among Week 16 quarterbacks in expected points added (6.3) and EPA per dropback (.22). He was third in success rate (55.2%), which gauges the effectiveness of every play toward its goal. It was only the second double-digit victory by a Falcons quarterback making his first start. (Matt Ryan was the other.)”

Penix completed 18-of-27 passes, throwing for a total of 202 yards.

“He didn’t throw a touchdown, but he came close on a few occasions, with Bijan Robinson and Drake London both apologizing to the rookie quarterback for not bringing a Penix pass into the end zone on back-to-back plays,” Tori McElhaney with the Atlanta Falcons wrote.

“I got to give glory to God. I thank God for putting me in this position,” he said.

Penix Jr. is now preparing for his second start in the NFL. The Falcons faced the Washington Commanders in Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland on Sunday.

“I’m a pro — I feel like I carry myself like a pro all the time in everything I do,” Penix Jr. told the media about his preparation for the game. “So, you’ve always got to keep the main thing, the main thing. Christmas is amazing, it’s the birth of Jesus Christ. I’m strong in my faith, but at the same time, we’ve got to work. We got work to do, and we’ve got games we’re trying to win, so, you balance it.”

“I’ll make sure I do the gifts and stuff, but as soon as I get a little break, I’m going to go study so I’m ready for the game,” he added. “I’ll be able to do both. It’s a lot of time in the day.”
