Jonathan Roumie Teases ‘Intensity’ Coming in THE CHOSEN Season 5

Jonathan Roumie discussed the experiences Jesus will face during Season 5 of THE CHOSEN and how this will impact his character.
“[Season 5 is a] steamroller, bulldozer, you know, intensity, just a melee of emotions and conflicts, climaxes of conflicts between Jesus and the authorities, climactic frustration between Jesus and His disciples, you know, their inability to get what He’s telling them within days of it happening,” Roumie told THE 700 CLUB when asked to describe the upcoming season.
“So there’s a profound sense of love and sorrow but also hope knowing what’s to come beyond the crucifixion,” Roumie continued. “So, it’s a loaded season. It’ll be the most beautiful, most complex, most intense season we’ve ever done, and it’s going to be quite amazing.”
Season 5 follows Jesus and his disciples through Holy Week, exploring the events directly leading up to the crucifixion. After four seasons exploring the earlier years of Jesus’ earthly ministry, this one takes it to new heights as he approaches the suffering He will face for all of humanity.
“We’re coming to a point in the story where, you know, Jesus’ humanity is on full display. He’s going to become the suffering servant and His responses to that will be utterly human,” Roumie said. “Seeing all His friends leave Him, you know, the desolation, the isolation, the despair, how they feel about Him, there’s a lot of the humanity getting concentrated now. I think it’s like a super-concentration of humanity before we see a super-concentration of divinity in the resurrection.”
Filming for the season ended last summer, and director Dallas Jenkins announced that the season will premiere in theaters before becoming available to stream, following the same release format of Season 4. The release will occur in three parts, with the first part (Episodes 1-2) releasing on March 27, 2025, followed part two (Episodes 3-5) and three (Episodes 6-8) debuting over the next four weeks.
