Why Are We Looking for ‘Hope’ in Google?

Hope” is one of the most searched terms on Google, but what’s driving this shared quest for something bigger?

The query is more popular than political, entertainment or tech news. It could mean that people are feeling more hopeful, or it could mean they’re feeling desperate, according to Relevant.

The past few years have been anxious for many, with COVID-19 and bleak climate and political events, social media dread, and other factors. Amongst all of this, people have literally been searching for hope, which is on trend with what people do in moments of crisis.

In the 2008 financial fall, “prayer” searches surged. In the pandemic, searches for “faith” soared. People were looking for hope and meaning. What’s different about this “hope” search is that there’s not one significant event triggering it, yet everyone’s looking for the same thing.

The search comes with the social media flood of “toxic positivity,” which preaches faith in oneself and blind optimism. But it seems people are seeing through this cheap packaging and aren’t buying it.

The search for hope suggests that many haven’t given up on a bigger meaning but don’t know where to look. As Christians, we do know where to look. We know that true hope is found through Christ and his divine promises. But we’ve got to dig deeper than just putting it on our bumper stickers.

College Campus Missionary Stephanie Parks says we need to remember and remind others that “’He who promised is faithful’ (Heb. 10:23). ” She continued, “He will always come to meet us—sometimes with great surprises and answers to prayer, and sometimes just as Himself, in the midst of our disappointment, in all of His kindness and mercy. And though we won’t always find Him immediately, when we keep looking for Him, and keep looking for Him, we know that He will come. This is our pursuit of divine intimacy with our Lord: continuing to seek Him and knowing that He also never stops seeking us.”

Billy Graham’s ministry also points out that hope is never lost. Keep in mind Proverbs 23:18, which says, “There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.”
