New Study Reveals Just How Dangerous Marijuana Use Is

By Movieguide® Contributor

A shocking new study finds that marijuana users are six times more likely to have a heart attack than those who don’t use the drug.

“Research consistently shows a significant association between cannabis use and acute coronary events, particularly among younger users,” the study, published by JACC Journals, reads

Cannabis users are six times more likely to have a heart attack, four times more likely to have an ischemic stroke and two times more likely to experience heart failure. The risk of death from cardiovascular problems, heart attack or stroke was tripled.

The study analyzed data from 4.6 million people, following people under 50 with no previous co-morbidities from 2010 to 2018, and found “evidence linking cannabis use to adverse cardiovascular events, including MI [Myocardial Infarction], ischemic stroke, HF [heart failure] and mortality.”

SciTechDaily reported, “While the mechanisms through which marijuana or its components may impact the cardiovascular system are not fully understood, the researchers hypothesize that it can affect heart rhythm regulation, heighten oxygen demand in the heart muscle, and contribute to endothelial dysfunction, which makes it harder for the blood vessels to relax and expand, and can interrupt blood flow.”

“Asking about cannabis use should be part of clinicians’ workup to understand patients’ overall cardiovascular risk, similar to asking about smoking cigarettes,” Dr. Ibrahim Kamel, the study’s lead author and clinical instructor at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, told SciTechDaily.

Kamel added, “At a policy level, a fair warning should be made so that the people who are consuming cannabis know that there are risks.”

In comments obtained by PEOPLE, Kamel stressed the importance of being honest with your doctors if you have consumed cannabis.

“Patients should be forthcoming with their doctors and remember that we are their number one advocate and having the full story matters,” he explained

These new findings align with Movieguide®’s cautions against watching drug use and abuse in TV shows and movies.

“Why do people use drugs? To medicate their psychic pain, to soothe their restless souls,” Movieguide® reported. “But as St. Augustine said in the 4th century, ‘Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee.’ The more people embrace the Lord, the less we have to build homeless shelters for young people tragically turning to drugs for solace.”
