A MINECRAFT MOVIE debuted to over $300 million at the global box office, offering much-needed boost to the industry while breaking records.
“We’re thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater,” said CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group (WBP) Pamela Abdy.
“A MINECRAFT MOVIE’s decade long journey to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP’s Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response,” she added in a statement with her studio co-chief Michael De Luca.
The movie helped deliver the strongest box office opening since Thanksgiving, with a $157 million domestic debut and a total global gross of $301 million. In a year with few hits, the movie has already become the No. 3 movie of the year and is poised to take at least second place.

Despite Minecraft being the most popular video game ever released, the movie adaptation’s success wasn’t guaranteed. As opposed to the Mario franchise, which has a overarching storyline that most games follow (i.e. Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach and Mario works to save her), Minecraft does not have a story that players follow through the game. Instead, Minecraft provides players with a set of tools to allow their creativity to run wild, with as few limitations as possible. While this creates a fun gaming experience, it left the moviemakers with little already established plot to pull from.

Warner Bros., however, leaned into the strong moral values and created a movie approachable for most audiences, allowing it to shine. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
A MINECRAFT MOVIE is a funny, light-hearted tale with deep meaning. It has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where people find meaning, strength, love, and courage in friendship to fight evil. A once self-absorbed character risks his life to save his friend. The evil queen says to hope, dream and create is to suffer, but the hero rebukes her by telling her that cowards choose to destroy things because it’s easier. A MINECRAFT MOVIE has lots of action violence, some light foul and crude language, a few scary images, rude humor, and some scary images. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers.
If history has any merit on the success of A MINECRAFT MOVIE, the movie will smash the billion dollar mark at the box office, as it had an even higher opening than THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, which ended up $1.36 billion.
