TOP GUN: MAVERICK director Joseph Kosinksi is setting his sights on rebooting another beloved franchise — the filmmaker will direct a MIAMI VICE remake.
“Universal Pictures has set Joseph Kosinski to direct MIAMI VICE, a drama based on the iconic ’80s NBC series about undercover cops taking down drug dealers,” Deadline reported, adding that Dan Gilroy is rewriting Eric Warren Singer’s first draft script.
Casting has not yet been announced. In addition to directing, Kosinski will also produce the movie through his company, Monolith.
This is the second time a reboot of MIAMI VICE has been brought to the big screen; in 2006, Michael Mann, an executive producer on the original series, directed an adaptation that starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
The original series, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, was a massive hit for NBC, lasting for five seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Kosinski has been working on getting this project off the ground for the last year. However, this isn’t the only movie he has in the pipeline. In addition to this summer’s F1, starring Brad Pitt, Kosinski is also set to start work on an untitled UFO conspiracy thriller for Apple.
“To be written by Academy Award-nominee Zach Baylin, the untitled thriller will explore disclosure around UAPs (formerly known as UFOs),” Deadline reported, adding that the movie will reunite Kosinski with Jerry Bruckheimer. The two previously worked together on TOP GUN: MAVERICK and F1.
Speaking about F1 at this year’s CinemaCon, Bruckheimer teased, “We believe this is going to be the cinematic experience of the summer,” adding the movie will give viewers “action, romance and humor. It’s truly the ultimate theater experience.”
Kosinski jumped in to praise Pitt for “driving himself at 180 miles an hour.”
“Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start, and I don’t know where he got that or if he was born with it, and he rides motorcycles, which I think has something to do with it,” he elaborated at a press event earlier this year. “But he’s just a very talented, naturally gifted driver, which for Lewis [Hamilton, F1 driver and producer on the movie] after that first meeting gave him a lot of confidence that we might have a shot at pulling this off.”
From his proven success with TOP GUN: MAVERICK to his upcoming high-profile projects, it looks like Kosinski is the perfect person to helm Universal’s MIAMI VICE reboot.
