Could Pixar’s latest movie, ELIO, already have a sequel in the works?
“We leave the door open,” co-director Domee Shi told ScreenRant. “Well, this is a spoiler for the end of the movie, but yeah, the universe is so vast, and the world of ELIO is so rich. There are so many more aliens and planets we could visit.”
Co-director Madeline Sharafian added, “There were so many aliens we had to trim for time, characters with featured moments that were so funny.”
“There’s so much there. A whole story. So much more,” Shi concluded.
An official synopsis of ELIO reads, “The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.”
Movieguide® reviewed ELIO favorably, praising its “very engaging” plot line, as well as its “vibrant colors and a fantastic soundtrack.”
“It has many comedic, action-packed, emotional elements,” the review continued. “The movie shows a strong amount of moral, redemptive themes such as kindness, family bonds, love, and sacrifice, as well as allegorical death, baptism and resurrection.”
It’s still unknown whether or not Pixar and Disney plan on going ahead with a sequel for ELIO, but Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter has spoken about the decision-making process for the studio when it comes to deciding whether or not to make a follow-up.
“It really — it is kind of like a dance between the audience,” he told ScreenRant. “If nobody cares about the movie, if it doesn’t do well, we don’t really generally explore it. However, if it’s been really great and we can’t find an idea, we don’t really explore. So it really has to hit on two or three different places.”
Docter continued, “We have to know that people love it and we have to feel like it really has something more to bring. And sometimes we dig for a long time and don’t find anything. So yeah, all these things are a little bit mysterious and you have to allow for that mystery.”
While Disney and Pixar have not confirmed a sequel, ELIO’s co-directors recent comments have many fans hopeful that the story isn’t over yet.
