Drew and Jonathan Scott’s mom never expected to give birth to twins.
“I was a surprise baby,” Drew said on an appearance on Rosanna Pansino’s “Rodiculous” podcast recently. “So imagine you’re having your baby, you’re going through labor. It’s finally done and you’re like, ‘Relief, finally, that’s past me.’ And then the nurse is like, ‘I think there’s another baby.’”
The doctors thought there was only one baby because the boys’ “heartbeats were in sync.”
“I have an older brother, and my mom was way bigger than she was with J.D.,” the CHASING THE WEST star said. “And so my mom was like, ‘Are you sure it’s not twins or something?’ And the doctor was like, ‘No, it’s just one big baby.’”
In 1978, they’d only perform ultrasounds if there was a complication.
“I’m that old,” Drew joked.

After Jonathan was born, the doctor left the room.
“The nurse was like, ‘Wait doctor, I think there’s another baby.’ And my mom’s words to bring me into this world was, ‘Oh sh–,’” he joked.
“And so, she goes through it again. Out I come. Heavens sing,” he said.
Jonathan previously praised his parents: “Our family has always been behind us in everything we do. Our parents taught us by example to love and support each other no matter what.”
“One thing I always looked forward to was one-on-one time with Mom or Dad. I don’t know how they managed it, but they always made us feel like special individuals,” Drew said.
The brothers previously talked about their parents’ home in the Canadian Rockies in one of their shows.
“Up in the Rocky Mountains, they had this killer view. They’ve lived their whole lives there — 60 years they’ve been together. This has been where they first met, and where they were before they moved down here,” Drew said, referring to his parents’ relocation to Los Angeles to the twins and their kids.
Their parents say the twins have always been entrepreneurs.
Their mom gave advice to other parents who want to encourage can-do attitudes in their children.
“One: Support and encourage their hopes and dreams. Two: Make sure they know there’s no such thing as a stupid question. Three: Any business must start with a plan and build on that.”
“We always ate dinner together. That’s the perfect time to brainstorm about what things your kids love or would love to do and how it could be turned into a job,” she said. “Bouncing ideas off of each other can be really inspirational.”
The brothers’ latest show, CHASING THE WEST just premiered on July 30. New episodes are available every Wednesday on HGTV at 9 p.m. ET.
