Universal and DreamWorks Animation pushed back SHREK 5’s release date, and we don’t know why.
Originally, the movie was slated to release on Dec. 23, 2026, but now fans will have to wait about six more months until June 2027, Variety reported.
Some have pointed to the studios’ success with previous summer hits like DESPICABLE ME, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE as the reason for the delay.
But the new release date means SHREK 5 will have to compete with Sony’s animated SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE.
With this change, Universal moved up an untitled Illumination project from June 30, 2027, to April 16, 2027.
While Shrek fans will have to wait a little longer than expected, it will be worth it.
“We’re still making the movie about two years into it. You can’t tell what the movie is,” Eddie Murphy, who plays Donkey, told Collider. “With any of the SHREK movies, you don’t know what it is because you don’t get a script. When you go to do a session, you get like, ‘Okay, here are the scenes that we’re going to do.’ Maybe sometimes they’ll draw some pictures so you can see a little storyboard.”
“But then you just go in and do it, and you don’t know what it’s going to be like,” the actor continued. “Then the next session, you just do these voiceovers. So you don’t know what it’s going to be until you see the whole movie. I’ve done a lot of really funny stuff on this new SHREK one. So I don’t know how they’re going to cut it together, but the Donkey character, I just fall in, and it’s second nature. And it’s really funny stuff, just that comes out. Because I do a lot of improvising with that, too.”
Along with Murphy, SHREK 5 will see Mike Myers return as the titular green ogre, along with Cameron Diaz as Fiona and newcomer Zendaya.

In an interview with ScreenRant last month, Murphy revealed they’re still working on SHREK 5 and also detailed the spinoff that will be all about his character, Donkey.
“We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing SHREK,” he said. “We start in September on DONKEY — we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll [be released] three years from now. But we’re about two years into SHREK 5. Still in the booth and about to start DONKEY in September.”
“DONKEY’s going to be like how PUSS IN BOOTS had his own movie, Donkey’s going to have his own movie — [his] own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September.”
SHREK fans certainly have a lot to look forward to.
