Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum in LORD OF THE RINGS movies, can’t wait to start filming THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.
“I’m very excited to go back. I leave for New Zealand on Saturday [Sept. 6],” Serkis said. “We’re going down to start prep and working on it, because I’m directing. I’m thrilled to return to the family that I’ve loved working with for many years, and a character that I cannot escape from.”
The movie will be in theaters on Dec. 12, 2027. Serkis stars in it and directs. He has played Gollum since 2002 in THE TWO TOWERS.
Warner Bros. first announced the movie in 2024 and said it would be ready in 2026. However, they delayed it to 2027.
Peter Jackson, known for directing THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT movies, will produce HUNT FOR GOLLUM with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

Warner Bros. said the three producers “will be involved every step of the way.”

Boyens called THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM “quite an intense story” that “falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria. It’s a specific chunk of an incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”
Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed other cast members, but original LOTR cast members Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortensen have all expressed interest in returning.
It is confirmed that Frodo and Gandalf’s characters will appear in THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.
McKellen said at a LOTR panel at London’s For Love of Fantasy last month: “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: there’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!”
Serkis shared why he loves working with Jackson in 2022.
“I feel very lucky to have worked with Peter Jackson, because he opened up a whole new arena with the technology of performance capture,” he said of the method in which he acts as Gollum. “It’s 20 years since we did THE LORD OF THE RINGS.”
“Performance capture is one of the most exciting tools for an actor,” he said. “It means that you can become anything regardless of your physicality, shape, size, skin colour, sex…Anyone can become anything.”
THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM will be the first LOTR movie not directed by Jackson. But as the movie is all about Gollum, it makes sense that the Gollum actor would direct it.
