Get ready, BLUE BLOODS fans! Thanks to the close proximity of Boston and New York, fans can expect to see multiple familiar faces return in spinoff series BOSTON BLUE, showrunner Brandon Sonnier said.
“We are a continuation of the BLUE BLOODS universe, which truly means we live in the same universe,” Sonnier said. “You know…Boston and New York is only a three-hour drive. So it’s well within reason that folks from the city could make an appearance from time to time. That’s something we’re having fun playing with.”
Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan, shared a similar sentiment since BOSTON BLUE was first announced, encouraging fans that they will see many of their favorite BLUE BLOODS characters again.

“New York and Boston are really close,” Wahlberg told Parade in June. “They’re not that far apart. I like the way you asked the question. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us. Yeah, BLUE BLOODS is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa [Martin-Green, who plays Lena Peters, Danny Reagan’s new partner]. She’s a BLUE BLOODS fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a BLUE BLOODS fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”
In fact, fans already know who the first returning character will be: Erin Reagan, Danny’s sister. Bridget Moynahan was confirmed to be reprising her role as Erin in July when she and Wahlberg posted a picture behind the scenes of the show.
“Reunited and it feels so good!” Wahlberg said on the post. “So excited to have my dear friend, and TV sister @bridgetmoynahan, join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of #BostonBlue!”
“We landed on Bridget because in the story we were telling, it made the most sense that it would be Erin,” Sonnier said when explaining why she was picked for the premiere. “They had this relationship throughout BLUE BLOODS of butting heads, but she was always looking out for Danny, right? So it felt like, in this moment, who would drop everything and show up to look out for her brother but Erin? Then they can poke a little fun at each other. It’s all heart, and it’s all family.”
Given the way BLUE BLOODS ended, it is so exciting that the beloved cast might show up on BOSTON BLUE. BOSTON BLUE premieres on CBS on Friday, Oct. 17, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
