On Wednesday, Sept. 10, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Kirk, Turning Point USA’s founder, was known for his open debates and discussions where he’d firmly but kindly share his opinions with opponents. It is believed that he was shot for his beliefs. Regardless of the reason, no one deserves to be murdered over their opinion.

Since his death, people have flooded the internet with tributes and remembrances. But vile videos, posts and comments celebrating his death have also circulated.

A video shared by digital creator David Latting showed one TikToker saying, “First Nepal and now Charlie Kirk shot in Utah!” Another clip showed a woman dancing with a smile on her face with “Charlie Kirk Got Shot?!?!?!?!” written over her video. One more clip showed more hateful comments.

“Have they caught the hero yet?” one user asked, referring to the shooter.

Another said, “Best day, man. The person who shot him should be immortalized.”

We feel anger over the events that occurred on Wednesday. We feel sad and confused. But it is not okay to be happy over someone’s death. Kirk left behind his wife, Erika, and their two children.

So how should Christians respond when they see comments like these?

“You must have mercy for these people. I know there’s gonna be a lot of opinions. People are gonna be saying a lot of things right now about each other, but as believers in Jesus, we must show love,” Latting urged. “We must show the mercy of Christ to those who are unaware of it. We must be the light in this world, not just another voice.”

“I know that Charlie Kirk is now with our Father in heaven, and we’ll see him soon, along with many, many others,” the influencer continued. “I know there are injustices in this world. I know there are atrocities. I know there are murders, monsters, demons and war. I’m aware of all of it. But as Christians, we don’t join in with the voices of hatred. We give a different perspective.”

“We must give the perspective of mercy, of grace, of peace, of patience. We must give the perspective of the voice of God to those who refuse to hear it, so that one day they may walk in the truth as we do now. Do not grow hopeless, my friends, do not grow bitter,” Latting concluded.

Jesus clearly tells us in Mark 12:29-31, the two greatest commandments: “‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”  The second is this: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.'”

To love your neighbor means to love the people who may not deserve it. It means to love those who sin against us. And it means sharing the love of Jesus with everyone we interact with, whether online or in real life.

So, when you hear people talk about Kirk’s death, whether in a positive or negative light, point them back to Jesus because that’s what Kirk would have done. Continue to pray for the entire Kirk family, his friends and everyone affected by this tragedy.
