Though Kansas City Chiefs fans start tailgating on Sundays before the most church services begin, those fans still have a chance to attend a service in person, thanks to a church the Chiefs opened next to their stadium.

“Did you know there’s a nondenominational church right next to the Kansas City Chief’s home stadium, giving fans the opportunity to worship on Sundays before football games,” Christhlete posted on Instagram. “Back in 2014, the Chiefs owner Clark Hunt built the church beside Arrowhead Stadium so fans wouldn’t have to miss Sunday services because of game day.”

The Hunt family, who boast a strong faith themselves, work to bring faith not only to their team’s players but to the entire organization, encouraging fans to take their relationship with the Lord seriously. Hunt opened the church at a time when his team was not very good, so they would often have a noon game rather than a primetime time slot.

“It’s a great opportunity for our family to be able to come to a church service before the games as well, because on a typical Sunday, like a lot of our fans, we’re traveling to the game,” he previously said.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs look to promote faith in their players through a team chaplain who helps the athletes stay focused on what truly matters whether they are having a successful season or not.

“It’s the three f’s: faith is first and foremost, and then family, and then football,” team chaplain Father Richard Rocha said. “The players’ devotion to being well rounded men doesn’t just stop on the football field.”

This focus has caused the Chiefs to have some of the most vocal players about their faith including star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and elite kicker Harrison Butker.

“[God] is the most important thing,” Butker told SportsSpectrum before Super Bowl LVII. “If I didn’t have faith in God, I don’t think I’d be the father I am, the husband I am, the kicker I am. That kind of sets the tone for everything else and everything falls under that, but that gives me the strength to go do everything I need to do.”

“I may have fears about it — I might have pressure — but I know I’m a child of God, and He’s gonna protect me,” he continued. “And maybe that protection comes with some suffering, but that’s what’s best for me and I gotta accept that suffering and grow as best I can with that.”

It is incredible to see a professional sports team place such an emphasis on faith and not only help its players connect with the Lord but enable its fans to do the same.
