DAVID director Brent Dawes shared the story behind his new movie and why families should go out and see the movie in theaters when it releases later this month.
“To a large degree, I think Hollywood has sort of fallen into a trap of sort of throwing popcorn and candy at the screen, you know? It’s like, look over here, look over here, here’s a gag, here’s this, and I’ve started to notice it’s a little bit more like fast food… [But] we want to make things that really have a beauty to them, that have a resonance to them, and that stand the test of time,” Dawes told Movieguide®.
“And the way we’ve gone about DAVID and having made it, we were like, yes, this is what we want to do. You know, we’re not going to take shortcuts,” he continued. “We want to tell movies that have a richness, depth, resonance, and that moves the needle in a positive direction for humanity.”

David’s story certainly gave Dawes and his team plenty of material to work with, and they struggled to include everything they wanted to without making the movie too long. They were, however, able to keep the movie at a reasonable length while capturing the heart of David’s story.
“From the songs of his mother’s heart to the whispers of a faithful God, David’s story begins in quiet devotion. When the giant Goliath rises to terrorize a nation, a young shepherd armed with only a sling, a few stones, and unshakable faith steps forward. Pursued by power and driven by purpose, his journey tests the limits of loyalty, love, and courage – culminating in a battle not just for a crown, but for the soul of a kingdom,” a synopsis of the movie reads.
While the movie will surely have a large impact on its audience when it releases, it has already greatly impacted the life of one of its actors: Phil Wickham. Wickham was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of voicing an animated character by playing adult David in the movie.
“There are few men that have had a greater impact on my life than King David. His story, his songs, and his faith have shaped me deeply,” Wickham said in a press release. “What an honor it has been to help bring this character to life! It truly has been a dream come true that I never saw coming.”
“Finding David’s voice inside of me was both a challenge and a joy — thanks to an amazing team who helped guide the way! I’m so proud to be a part of such a beautiful and life-giving film. I believe it will fill hearts with hope, and lift eyes to Heaven for many years to come.”
DAVID is sure to be a joy for audiences of all ages when it releases in theaters on Dec. 19. Families should consider seeing this movie in theaters this holiday season and enjoy heart of David’s story through this musical adventure.
