It’s official — BOSTON BLUE is coming back for a second season!

“Two new shows on Friday night have become instant hits with audiences quickly embracing BOSTON BLUE and SHERIFF COUNTRY across broadcast and streaming,” Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement about the shows’ early renewal. “These early renewals reflect the power of character-driven storytelling, compelling narratives and the exceptional talent on both sides of the camera.”

It’s no surprise BOSTON BLUE scored an early renewal; according to the Nielsen data, the BLUE BLOODS spin-off “averaged 8 million viewers in Nielsen live plus 7-day multiplatform ratings, with streaming alone up +87% from BLUE BLOODS last fall and is consistently a time period winner at 10:00 p.m. Fridays.”

Star Donnie Wahlberg celebrated the news with an Instagram story, writing, “Brooklyn and Beantown ride again. So thankful to all of our cast, crew and viewers!”

CBS also posted about the renewal, writing, “It’s official: the dream team is here to stay!” under a photo of Wahlberg and co-star Sonequa Martin-Green.

Speaking to CBS News about the end of BLUE BLOODS and the idea for BOSTON BLUE, Wahlberg said, “I love BLUE BLOODS. I fought tooth-and-nail to keep it on the air. And here’s an opportunity to keep this character alive. And suddenly, when I started to look at it through that lens, it was like, how do I not do this? If all those millions of BLUE BLOODS fans don’t show up and love it, then I know we put our best foot forward.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin-Green shared her own enthusiasm about the show and her character, saying, “I’ve never been able to play a character who’s so grounded, assured and confident. I also love [that] there’s an element of joy with her.”

While BOSTON BLUE might take place in Wahlberg’s hometown, the actor explained why production had to move to Toronto after making the show’s pilot in Boston.

“Filming in Boston was the most fun I’ve ever had on set, but it was difficult because I took 10,000 selfies a day. Duck boats were driving by every 10 minutes,” he told THR. “I might as well have been a statue in Boston. It was wonderful for the cast to get familiar with Boston and my connection to the city, but it also became obvious that nine months filming there might not be sustainable.”

There’s no word yet on when we can expect Season 2 of BOSTON BLUE, but fans can’t wait!
