Actress Erinn Hayes says her new show IT’S NOT LIKE THAT “tackles faith in a very real way.”
“We are technically a faith-based show, but I think that the message is nothing other than kindness and compassion and meeting other people with grace,” Hayes told Us Weekly. “That is [a message for] all humans.”
Per Deadline, IT’S NOT LIKE THAT “follows Lori (Hayes), who is freshly divorced with two teens. Malcolm’s (Scott Foley) a minister and recently widowed dad of three. Their families once did everything together, but now Lori and Malcolm must navigate their newly minted singledom, parenthood and the complexities of Malcolm being a modern-day minister. Is this the beginning of a love story? It’s not like that. Or is it?”

“Our show tackles faith in a very real way,” Hayes explained. “The conversations about faith and God occur with Malcolm and his family. They occur where they would occur in real life. It’s him talking to his kids and him talking about his own experience. Sometimes we’re in the church.”
The actress explained that IT’S NOT LIKE THAT is “a family drama about the human condition,” adding, “Our writers are so good with every script having the depth and heart and humor too. There’s moments in it where you get to play and explore all of the human condition. That really drew me to the project.”
“It was just a lovely place to be doing work,” Hayes continued. “I think all of us are proud of the scripts and we were invested in the show. It’s one thing to have a nice and happy set but it’s different when you know that you’re making something special.”
Foley also spoke to Us Weekly about his role in the show, admitting he was a little nervous to take on the role of a pastor.
“He’s a community leader and he’s a faith leader as a pastor. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that but there’s also — more importantly — a faith and a belief that I find endlessly interesting for me to try to wrap my head around,” he said. “And then I had to embody a character who has that faith. It’s different than any any character I’ve played and it’s much more complicated than I thought it would be.”
Shows like IT’S NOT LIKE THAT show that Hollywood is taking a hint from some of the highest-performing shows and movies, greenlighting projects with Christian and family values.
“Movieguide®’s thorough review analysis proves that the more movies incorporate faith-filled elements and biblical principles, the better these movies do in the box office,” a report from Movieguide® stated. “Every year, we present the Report to the Entertainment Industry that shows studios how including immoral and excessive elements affect their bottom line. Hollywood can and should appeal to Christian audiences.”
IT’S NOT LIKE THAT’s first two episodes are now available to stream on Prime Video through the Wonder Project channel add-on.
