The fourth SONIC THE HEDGEHOG movie is in the works, and we just learned that two more big names will be part of the upcoming installment.
Ben Kingsley and Nick Offerman are joining the cast, alongside Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Kristen Bell, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Matt Berry, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub and Richard Ayoade.
Schwartz, who plays Sonic, announced Bell’s role as movie franchise newcomer Amy Rose on Instagram last month.
“WE HAVE OUR AMY ROSE!!! And I could not be more excited!!! Please welcome the incredible @kristenanniebell to the @sonicmovie family!!! 💙” he wrote in the caption alongside a photo of him and Bell holding figurines of Sonic and Amy Rose.
Fans are also exciting to see Carrey return after he said in 2022 that he would retire after SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2.
“I’m retiring,” he told Access Hollywood at the time. “Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
SONIC must be that gold-ink written script because Carrey appeared in the third installment, as well as the upcoming fourth.
We’re still in the dark about the exact storyline, though.
Variety reported, “Paramount’s live-action/CGI hybrid film series has proved incredibly lucrative at the global box office, grossing a collective $1 billion. Jeff Fowler has directed all three SONIC films, and he returns to helm the next installment of the family-friendly franchise. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 is set for theatrical release on March 19, 2027.”
A teaser trailer dropped last week, and fans are thrilled.
“I’m in the theater rn waiting peacefully,” one person said. The SONIC movie account responded, “good things come to those who wait 💙”
Whatever the storyline, hopefully SONIC 4 takes cues from previous installments’ family-friendly themes.
Of the most recent movie, Movieguide® said in its review, “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 has a strong moral, redemptive worldview. It overtly promotes family, adoption, love, sacrifice, making good choices, and doing the right thing. The movie also has a positive reference to God and a beautiful sentiment about light overcoming death. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 provides plenty of thrills, laughs and heartwarming moments. Caution is advised for some violence and five relatively light expletives.”
Although it’s still another year until its release, we can expect more exciting updates over the next several months!
