WONKA 2 will possibly come out as early as 2027.
With DUNE: PART THREE filming behind him, Timothée Chalamet will have some time to work on the new movie, which will start filming in August, SuperHeroHype reported.
Last year, director Paul King said the sequel was in development and “half written” already. Warner Bros previously marked a Dec. 17, 2027, date for an “untitled family film release,” which was later set for THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM. There’s no official confirmation for WONKA 2, but 2027 or early 2028 seems likely.
The original WONKA movie starred Chalamet, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant. It grossed $634.5 million worldwide on a budget of around $125 million. It earned an 82% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie serves as a prequel to Willy Wonka’s story as a candymaker. It humorously explores his passion, early career and trouble with competition.

Movieguide®’s review of WONKA reads, “WONKA is a very fun, funny movie, one of the most entertaining movies of the year. There are many fun and memorable songs throughout the movie, which makes it a delight to watch. WONKA shows good triumphing over evil through the magic of joy and great dreams.”
“It also supports the little entrepreneur starting his own little business in the face of a government-sanctioned cartel. However, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older pre-teens because the cartel has bribed the police and a cathedral and its clerics with chocolate they can’t resist.”
Movieguide® nominated it for a Teddy Bear Award® in 2024.
WONKA was recently available on Netflix but left the platform after King’s sequel news in December.
King said of the movie, “[Roald Dahl] makes this story-book world with these larger-than-life characters, but at the same time, you deeply care. I love the idea of telling a story where Willy Wonka wasn’t just this magical, admirable, extraordinary, inventive character, but where he was actually the emotional heart of the movie.”
Before he announced the sequel was in development, he said, “There is material to work from. I think if we came back to the character, it would probably be between here and Charlie because there’s 30 years there to explore.”
Chalamet said his role in WONKA held a lot of physical challenges for him.
“I can’t say the singing and dancing comes easy. I’ve been around musical theater my whole life, and danced a little bit in high school, but this was on a different level,” he said. “It’s different doing it on film.”
“You’ve got to keep being in the center of the frame while dancing, you’ve got to rehearse for months, you’ve got to be on for every take — take 12 and all the other takes — and dance with professional dancers, who are icing their ankles,” he said. “That’s how serious they were taking it. So it was a big challenge.”
Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait too long for another sweet WONKA treat.
