Candace Cameron Bure Talks Finding Balance in Health: ‘Enjoy It’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Candace Cameron Bure recently spoke with Melanie Samuels and Melissa Coulier about health and nutrition.

Samuels and Coulier head up the brand Living Well With Mel and Mel.

“Living Well With Mel and Mel is an inclusive community for women who are struggling with inflammation,” Samuels said.

Everyone has some degree of inflammation in their body, and they aim to make “living an anti-inflammatory life very approachable and realistic through nourishing our bodies, and enjoying what we’re eating, through intentional movement, and through aligning your mindset with all of your choices.”

Samuels then explained how there is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition because everyone has different needs.

“We need to stop comparing ourselves to others and look at your own situation as your own story and make sure to reflect that with how you eat,” she said.

One way to do this is through the “80/20” rule.

“The 80/20 lifestyle is basically taking the 80% as creating a sanctuary in your kitchen, meaning making food from scratch as much as possible, using real whole foods most of the time, so that’s that 80% of the time,” Samuels said.

“And then in addition to the food component, having that ability to slow down when you eat is part of that 80%… then the 20%… is flexibility, because that’s how we don’t feel deprived,” she continued. “When you are able to have a piece of carrot cake on your birthday and not feel that mental or physical consequence because you have done the work 80% of the time.”

Bure emphasized that having a positive mindset when you eat has changed her perspective on food.

“It makes a massive difference if you sit and enjoy it. Allow your body to [not] feel guilty for eating it. That in itself, I’m telling you, the mental state of enjoying your food and being in a calm place. I did not understand how that would relate to my body physically. So I could eat the exact same food one day in a calm state, eat the same thing the next day when I’m working, I’m stressed out, I’m busy, and I can have symptoms… like all the gross things we don’t want to talk about. And it was the same food, but I was in a different mental state. It’s so connected,” she said.

Bure frequently opens up about nutrition and fitness. Earlier this year, she shared her commitment to working out in 2024.

“I just went on my first 30-minute run or jog, I should say. I haven’t jogged in a couple of years…I decided that I need to add cardio back into my routine, aside from my circuit cardio. Just something a little extra. So, I’ve committed myself to 2 days a week, getting between 20 and 30 minutes of jogging in, or some kind of cardio,” she said of her fitness goals.

For the actress, exercise improves her mental health.

“Just sweating that out and all those endorphins really help me a lot. I notice a huge difference when I don’t exercise, how much it can affect me mentally and kind of deal with depression,” she said in 2021. “That’s why I keep going. There are a lot of benefits I get. My mind is most important, and exercise definitely helps that.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Bure’s conversation with her personal trainer Kira Stokes:

Candace Cameron Bure is kicking off her 2024 with a discussion about fitness and connection.

“I think, within the first few minutes of us even talking, we understood one another, and I think that’s a great point to anybody who’s looking for a trainer,” Bure’s trainer Kira Stokes said during an episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.”

She and Bure struck up a friendship after a mutual friend connected them for a training session. Stokes explained that having this connection with whomever you’re training with is very important.

“Be really aware of the energy that you’re receiving from the person right off the bat,” she said. “This is your body, and you’re likely spending some money, so you have the right to feel whether that feels good to you.”

Bure emphasized that sentiment, sharing that, as she’s gotten older, she understands the importance of connection.
