Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors, Chris Pratt almost entered fame under a different name.

The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY star recently shared the story on an episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, revealing the silly nickname that he almost became known for.

“Not even rebranded, just branded. I was gonna be ‘Christo,'” he said. “I had a name tag that said Christopher, but at Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Company, the P H E R part got rubbed off, so it said Christo.”

Because of the worn name tag, the nickname stuck for quite a while.

“Everyone called me Christo for a long time,” Pratt explained. “While I was working at Bubba Gump, high turnover rate, new employees thought my name was Christo.”

When Pratt entered Hollywood, he seriously considered keeping the name.

“As I navigated being discovered and brought to Los Angeles to follow my dreams, part of me thought — in earnest — maybe I’d go, ‘It’s just Christo,’” he said.

Ultimately Pratt decided to keep it simple and go by “Chris” — although several people have confused him with Hollywood’s many other famous Chris’s.

“I think someone on this press tour called me Chris Pine,” Pratt admitted. “Yeah, don’t think they mistake me, think it’s just the alliteration.”

Pratt began working at Bubba Gump Shrimp when he was 19. At one point, he served actress Rae Dawn Chong, who cast in him her short CURSED PART 3 in 2000. His career took off after that, but he hasn’t forgotten where it all began.

“Every time I go back I’m reminded of the thousands of shrimp I ate off of people’s plates on the way back to the kitchen,” he admitted previously, adding, “Please tip your server. Leave at least 20%. Also leave some shrimp.”

A lot has changed since his time at Bubba Gump. Now instead of serving shrimp, Pratt dishes out great acting. His latest movie, MERCY, just debuted in theaters.

In the near future, a detective stands on trial accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to the advanced A.I. Judge he once championed, before it determines his fate,” a synopsis reads

Movieguide®’s review notes:

MERCY has an intense, interesting plot device and premise supporting one man’s quest for justice. However, nearly the entire story involves the detective just sitting in the chair and going over the evidence and videos associated with his case. It’s a bit claustrophobic. MERCY has a strong moral, pro-family worldview about pursuing justice and promoting family ties. However, it has two villains who go too far, though they don’t get away with their crimes. MERCY also has strong violence and excessive foul language, including six strong profanities. So, MOVIEGUIE® advises extreme caution.

Pratt has certainly come a long way from his days as “Christo.”
