Derek Hough Calls Wife’s Recovery from Emergency Surgery a ‘Miracle’

Derek Hough knows that his wife Hayley Erbert’s recovery has been nothing less than a miracle.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, the DANCING WITH THE STARS alum shared his thoughts on her recovery from an emergency craniotomy and cranioplasty.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle, honestly,” he said. “Both Hayley and I’ve shared our gratitude towards the medical professionals and everybody that was just so on top of their game and just did the best they could and did an incredible job.”
Doctors originally believed that Erbert would suffer permanent damage, but to their surprise, no long-term damage was found.
“Hypothetically or even metaphorically, we felt this beautiful energy from everybody, and it was really special. I think that each day there’s a win, there’s a triumph, there’s a step forward. I think the hardest thing is reliving some of those moments. They kind of creep up and pop up in your head. I think they’re so difficult,” Hough told Fox News Digital.
On their dance tour last December in Washington, D.C., Erbert became disoriented and was rushed to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma, or bleeding in the brain, as Movieguide® reported.
Four months later, Erbert is doing well and has returned to dancing with her husband.
In an Instagram video of the couple performing, she wrote, “What a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months. My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more. I am so appreciative of the doctors who have supported me in my decision to dance again and my team of specialists that have been assembled to assure that my health and safety is priority. I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special.”
Many commented sweet words, sharing their thankfulness for Hayley’s recovery, including her mom, who said, “I am so amazing by your determination and fight my beautiful warrior daughter. I love you so much! Your life and recovery is a true blessing. This is the icing on the cake.”

“There’s a possibility, there really is,” Hough told E! News. “And we actually met dancing on stage on tour. Our first kiss was on stage on tour. We were touring last year for the first time as a married couple and now this, going back out, there’s a completely different meaning and tension.”
“Because if there’s a moment where she’s with us and joining us on stage, it’s going to be unbelievably special,” he added. “I don’t know even know how I’m going to get through it. I’m an emotional guy.”
