“Words—they can lift up or tear down,” she began in the post. “I do not understand how anyone can use the R word as a joke, for a laugh, or to bully or hurt someone. Please join me on Spread the Word Day and every day in helping to end the R word. Let’s stand up against derogatory language, bullying and exclusion. Take the pledge now & make your voice count!”
In the post, McCormick is seen standing next to her brother Denny who has developmental disabilities. She knows first-hand how word’s such as the R word can hurt.
Fans showed support for McCormick and her brother in the comments.
“As the mother and grandmother of children on the spectrum, I couldn’t agree more! You and Denny are true inspirations for how all of us! Love y’all!!” one user said.
Another person added, “Yessss! Thank you for sharing this message! It’s time to dump that hateful word for good ❤️”
More and more people are learning the importance of speakign with kindness as we become aware of people in our community who deal with disabilities.
The CDC states “Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the child’s developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime.”
McCormick previously opened up about her brother’s disability.
“Back when Denny was born they told my parents that he should be institutionalized or put away and they fought for him. It’s something I grew up with and I’m just very very passionate about… It helps them get out in the community and it includes them in our society because for so long they were shunned from society and they have so much to offer the world.”
