Godzilla Franchise Announces Exciting Return for Upcoming Movie
By Movieguide® Contributor
As the Monsterverse gears up for its next installment, new details are emerging about the characters that will return, including a fan favorite from GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE.
Trapper, played by Dan Stevens, is one of the first human characters confirmed to be returning for the next movie in the franchise. A veterinarian by trade, Trapper was introduced in GODZILLA X KONG and joined the heroes on their trip into Hollow Earth after applying his skills to Godzilla and easing a toothache. Trapper is one of two human characters confirmed for the next movie, along with a new character played by Kaitlyn Dever.
While little has been revealed about the next installment of the franchise, it has been confirmed that Godzilla and King Kong will team up again to face another potentially world-ending event. Grant Sputore has been brought on to direct the film and Dave Callaham penned the script.

GODZILLA X KONG was the most successful movie in the Monsterverse yet, grossing $572 million worldwide, making it the most successful movie in the franchise. In total, the Monsterverse has grossed roughly $2.5 billion since launching in 2014 with GODZILLA. It has also received a spinoff show on Apple TV+. Despite frequent violence, the franchise has won over audiences through strong moral teachings along with an emphasis on friends and family. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
GODZILLA X KONG takes a while to expose the new villain and what’s really happening in Hollow Earth. However, there’s lots of exciting action before those revelations occur, and afterwards. GODZILLA X KONG has a strong moral worldview. The story’s goals are to protect human civilization and restore a fallen kingdom. GODZILLA X KONG also promotes the love between a mother and her adopted daughter. It’s marred, however, by lots of mostly light foul language and intense, scary violence featuring giant monsters.
The next movie is set to release on March 26, 2027, and is likely to perform well thanks to a shift towards premium formats like Imax and Dolby Cinemas, for which the Monsterverse is particularly suited. Forty-eight percent of GODZILLA X KONG’s opening was viewed in these formats, and more and more of these theaters are opening every year.
