Hollywood Resumes Production After Pausing for LA Fires

By Movieguide® Contributor

Hollywood studios have resumed work after pausing production to address health and safety concerns while also providing cast and crew time to lament the destruction of LA fires.

Nearly all productions paused for a short time as uncertainty about the blazes caused major concerns for the studios. To address health and safety concerns, most productions that are resuming are doing so on closed sound stages with health professionals at hand to monitor staff.

While production on these projects only paused for about a week, this hiccup could have long-lasting impacts, especially as the industry struggles to return to normal following the pandemic and 2023’s dual strikes.

“The industry in the town is so fragile that every little thing becomes a bigger bump in the road,” explained producer Kourtney Gleason. “Another bump that will push things back from getting ramped up.”

The fires also impacted the Oscars, delaying the announcement of this year’s award nominees while also making the announcement event online only, void of in-person media. The award show, however, is still slated to take place on March 2.

“We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in the community,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang in a statement. “The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship.”

“Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community, and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry,” Kramer and Yang added. “We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts. We will get through this together and bring a sense of healing to our global film community.”

The multiple fires across L.A. have burnt over 40,000 thousand acres, destroyed $200 billion in property and killed 24 people. Though firefighters were able to begin containing the fires last weekend thanks to favorable weather conditions, the blazes are expected to continue to grow as the Santa Ana winds return to fuel them.
