How Does Elon Musk’s New AI Chatbot Compare to Its Competition?

Elon Musk released a new chatbot called Grok-3 whose capabilities put it in competition with other chatbots like ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
“Grok is to understand the universe,” Musk said at a presentation launching the bot. “We’re driven by curiosity about the nature of the universe — that’s also what causes us to be a maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct.”
He added, “We’re continually improving the models every day, and literally within 24 hours, you’ll see improvements.”
Overall, Grok supersedes all of its competitors. Yahoo reported that Grok-3 beats OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Alphabet Inc.’s Google Gemini, DeepSeek’s V3 model and Anthropic’s Claude “across math, science and coding benchmarks.” Grok-3 has “‘more than 10 times’ the compute power of its predecessor.”

Musk is no stranger to developing AI technology. He helped found OpenAI in 2015, leaving the company in 2018. He’s since been at odds with founding partner Sam Altman, even attempting to buy OpenAI with a group of investors for $97.4 billion last week. His offer was rejected.
Although Musk has been a major innovator of AI technology, the world’s richest man also has his concerns.
“One of the biggest risks to the future of civilization is AI. But AI is both positive or negative—it has great promise, great capability but also, with that comes great danger,” Musk explained a few years ago.
“I think we need to regulate AI safety, frankly,” he added. “Think of any technology which is potentially a risk to people, like if it’s aircraft or cars or medicine, we have regulatory bodies that oversee the public safety of cars and planes and medicine.”
