How Reality TV Impacted These DUCK DYNASTY Stars’ Marriage

Looking back on the beginning years of their marriage, John Luke Robertson and his wife Mary Kate explained how being on DUCK DYNASTY impacted those years.
John and Mary Kate fell in love in high school and got engaged before going off to college. Though being famous felt normal to them at the time, they now realize that the show definitely made the beginning years of their marriage harder than it otherwise would have been.
“I look back on those early years of our marriage, and I think it was probably a lot harder than it could have been without having our lives so public,” John told his sister Sadie Robertson Huff. “I think had our lives not been so public, we would have had an easier time and not as in marriage but even just — I look back and I feel like that was such a formative time of my life to have so much attention; that’s not natural.”
In some ways, however, that attention and the pressure of being famous pushed John and Mary Kate to get married so young, something they are grateful for. Huff shared that she felt incredibly close with the friends she knew loved her for who she was, rather than because she was famous. John shared he felt the same way, with Mary Kate being one of those people he trusted.
“I mean, it was something about Mary Kate that, like, I knew she was real, I knew I loved her, I knew she loved me, like, there was no ulterior motive,” John said. “So there was like a level of trust that we had that I think in a different situation, without the show, [our relationship] still would have happened but it would have happened over a longer period of time.”
Now that the show is over and their lives have slowed down, the couple is thankful they can be more private, especially as they focus on raising their kids.
“As we get older, we’re kind of like becoming more private, like, we kind of see the, like, holiness or just like importance or being who you are and not having to put everything out there…” John said. “[The importance] of having your own private life.”

DUCK DYNASTY alumni John Luke and Mary Kate Robertson welcomed their first child, son John Shepherd, this week.
The pair, who’ve been married for four years, revealed his name via social media.
“Robertson family of 3!!!” proud new mom Mary Kate wrote.
John Luke is the son of Willie and Korie Robertson.
The younger Robertsons announced their pregnancy in May.
The couple still uses their platform to celebrate family and their faith.
Earlier this summer, Mary Kate shared the song “Head to Toe (The Armor of God Song” with her Instagram followers.
“This song in particular has just been playing on repeat in our house lately,” she wrote. “What a way to sing the armor of God over your kids and have them learn the words themselves.”
