For the first time, Imax has announced that it will show live coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremonies.

The Paris Olympics will air on big screens in 160 different AMC locations throughout the country, NBCUniversal wrote in a press release.

Per Deadline, “The first-ever Summer Olympic opening ceremony not held in a stadium will take place on the Seine river in Paris with a four-mile-long flotilla of nearly 100 boats carrying thousands of athletes from more than 200 countries past spectators seated on the banks. The river parade will follow the course of the Seine past iconic sites from Austerlitz Bridge, the Jardin des Plantes, cross through central Paris and finish in front of the Trocadéro, where the final elements of the show and ceremony will take place.”

NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel said, “We look forward to providing our Opening Ceremony coverage to audiences at IMAX locations across the country, sharing in this historic moment as the world regathers to witness the spectacular beginning of 16 days of athletic greatness against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”

“The Olympic Games always provide a wonderful, shared experience, and this summer communities across the country will have the opportunity to cheer for Team USA or their own hometown hero in local AMC Theatres,” Zenkel added. “The afternoon broadcasts on NBC will offer many of the most compelling live moments from Paris, and we believe these gatherings will fuel overall enthusiasm for the Games.”

AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron expressed, “We are excited to extend NBC’s daily live coverage of the Paris Olympic Games to AMC Theatres across the country, allowing fans to gather and watch the drama, intrigue, and spectacle of the Summer Games this July.”

Movieguide® previously reported on other unique ways the 2024 Olympics will be covered:

NBCUniversal will add some new features to Peacock for Summer Olympics fans.

“New features of note are Live Actions and Discovery Multiview, which is aimed at helping viewers find and engage more deeply with Olympic programming,” Deadline reported.

“The former lets viewers select events during live and primetime coverage and create their own feed comprised of only the sports they are interested in seeing. During live coverage, viewers can either keep watching live or stay with ‘whip-around’ coverage. In the social media era, the time-tested whip-around approach has come under scrutiny given that results are often known, sapping coverage of drama,” Deadline said.

Peacock will cover over 5,000 hours of live footage at the game in Paris from July 26 to Aug. 11. NBCUniversal hopes the enhanced features draw more viewers to its platform.
