NBCUniversal might launch a new sports channel, and while not official yet, it would also include Peacock’s current sports offerings like the NBA.
If approved, the channel could arrive as early as this fall, TheWrap said.
However, the outlet also points out that the plan seems “counterintuitive” for the company has it has started spinning off many of its cable channels into a separate entity called Versant.
This news comes as NBC prepares to celebrate its 100th year. The celebration coverage includes “Sunday Night Football’s 20th Season, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Kentucky Derby, Live from the Red Carpet, 24/7 news coverage, and late-night hits like SNL and THE TONIGHT SHOW.”
Additionally, NBC will host NBC 100, a “once-in-a-lifetime television event” with “a star-studded variety special commemorating 100 years of culture-defining content, from iconic moments to unforgettable stars.”
NBC is building up its NBA coverage, adding legendary basketball star Michael Jordan as a special contributor to NBA coverage on the network.
“I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC. The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I’m excited about being a special contributor to the project. I’m looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October,” Jordan said in a press release from NBCUniversal.
“Michael’s legacy both on and off the court speaks for itself,” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella added. “We’re incredibly proud to have him join our coverage.”

The NBA experience on Peacock is new this season. It features viewing options like “Instant Game Access, Catch Up With Key Plays, Can’t Miss Highlights, Peacock ScoreCard, Peacock Performance View and, coming later in the season, Courtside Live.”
“Peacock will be the most fun and engaging place to stream NBA games for longtime basketball fans and new ones, too,” Cordella said at the Upfront Presentation at Radio City Music Hall. “We’re bringing the same level of innovation, inspiration and commitment that we’ve brought to so many other huge sports moments and leagues to deliver an intuitive, interactive and reliable streaming experience that the full range of NBA fans will enjoy.”
Furthermore, Peacock has also become the “Spanish language home to the FIFA World Cup. In fact, Peacock will have more than 7,500 hours of sports in the next year alone and has more live sports than Amazon Prime, Paramount+, Hulu, Max, Apple TV and Netflix combined.”
Sports fans have a lot to look forward to from NBC in the coming months!
