Here’s What for KING + COUNTRY Singer Has Learned About Giving God Control

For KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone is a “recovering control freak,” and he’s sharing how that’s impacted his relationship with God.

“My name is Joel Smallbone, and I am a recovering control freak. It’s nice to meet you,” he said in a video on Instagram. “I have found myself at points questioning even God because I buy into this idea of God being in control. And what does that look like if God is in control? Why do these sorts of things happen?”

Smallbone continued, “And so, it’s been and will continue to be a lifelong journey of recognition that life is not about hanging on and trying to control the situation. Life is about recognizing and realizing that there are actually so many things that are completely out of our control.”

“My freest moments have not been when I’ve got everyone and everything in just the spot I want them to be,” he concluded. “My freest moments are actually in recognizing that it’s not my responsibility. It’s your responsibility and my responsibility to be free and to be present with God and with ourselves and with others.”

Smallbone isn’t the only one that struggles with always needing to be in control. Many of his followers share the same burden.

“I rewatch this video when i need motivation…,” one person wrote.”Especially at the end when you said ‘you’re not in control, but actually that’s a beautiful thing and that no one is designed to carry that load of responsibility, other than our Creator.'”

Another wrote, “Amen! I am also a recovering control freak. Let go and let God.”

For KING + COUNTRY are gearing up for their “Unsung Hero” tour, starting Sept. 19 in Indiana.

The tour is inspired by the movie, UNSUNG HERO, which chronicles the Smallbone family’s move from Australia to the United States. Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

UNSUNG HERO is a true story about a Christian family from Australia’s struggles to survive and thrive in the rough and tumble music business while trying to serve God. When the father, David Smallbone, loses big on promoting an unsuccessful tour, he thinks relocating the family to Nashville may be their best route forward. Odd jobs and a local church keep the family afloat while David seeks work in the music industry. David’s father, wife Helen and others tell him he should focus on the musical talent living under his own roof. The family’s prospects rise when he takes that advice to heart. Can focusing on God and family lead them to the new life they seek?

UNSUNG HERO is a powerful, compelling story of faith and family, told with lots of sincerity and heart. The acting and writing is very good and convincing. UNSUNG HERO has a strong Christian, biblical worldview. The family’s Christian faith is not only clear from their repeated prayers to Jesus to guide and provide for them, but also from their infectious enthusiasm and spiritually uplifting song lyrics.
