American journalist Katie Couric loves being a grandmother, but she has one important rule for herself.

“My only ‘grandmother rule’ is to not tell my daughter what to do,” she told PEOPLE.

Couric’s daughter Ellie welcomed son John Albert, who goes by “Jay,” in March 2024.

“She’s an extraordinary mom,” the journalist said of her daughter. “She’s doing an amazing job. And when it comes to parenting, I just keep my trap shut.”

Upon baby Jay’s birth, Couric announced on X, “It’s official — I have a grandson! (But don’t call me grandma lol) John Albert Dobrosky was born on Saturday at 8:23 a.m., and we could not be more thrilled to welcome him into the world.”

John’s nickname comes from Couric’s late husband Jay Monahan, who died in 1998 after battling cancer. Together, they shared daughters Ellie Monahan and Caroline Couric Monahan.

Ellie is married to Mark Dobrosky. The two met while attending Yale and later wed in 2021.

This past March, the proud grandmother shared a sweet photo of Jay on his first birthday. “Someone is turning one today!” she said in the caption.

“How is he 1 already? I feel like he was just a newborn and we’re not even related,” one person commented. Another user added, “Already!?!? Time flies for us grandmothers.”

Couric shared more about being a grandmother last fall after going to Las Angeles to see her grandson. She share about how he was trying new foods and finally sleeping through the night.

“But even more thrilling than seeing Jay’s cute face, seeing him try to put food in his mouth, and watching him play his Fisher Price piano…I’m filled with pride watching her manage everything so beautifully — from Jay’s nap to his feeding schedule and everything in between,” she said. “She’s gotten very relaxed, which I credit to getting more sleep. What a difference that makes in the life of a young mom (and dad!) “

She added, “Everyone says there’s nothing like having a grandchild. I didn’t really understand until I had one — it is so special. So here’s to grandparents and grandchildren everywhere! And I can’t wait until he can say Gogo…or whatever he ends up calling me!”

Couric reminds us that whether a parent or grandparent, new life is such a precious thing, and watching your own children become parents can be just as special!
