Pixar Exec Says Hits Like TOY STORY And INSIDE OUT Are ‘Fair Game’ For Sequels

Pixar has recently revealed potential plans to make sequels to popular movies like INSIDE OUT and the TOY STORY franchise.

“It’s all fair game,” Pixar’s creative chief officer Pete Docter told Variety, referring to all existing movie worlds, like FINDING NEMO and CARS.

Doctor continued, “Our philosophy from the beginning has been the same. The people have changed, but the approach is the same. We tap people that we believe in and feel like they have talent and something to say. We ask them to talk about things that are important to them. If this is impactful and powerful to a person, they’re going to get on the screen, and it will resonate with audiences. We’re looking to tap these amazingly talented people I get to work with to talk about universal stories that are about life issues that we all face.”

“Our movies on the surface are about fish, cars and monsters, but just below that, they’re really about all of us, and the challenge of dealing with loss, becoming a parent, finding our place in the world,” he concluded.

Returning to familiar — and proven — material might be the key to ending Pixar’s recent string of box office bad luck.

Variety reported that the studio’s most recent project, ELEMENTAL, “collapsed at the domestic box office with a $29.5 million opening, by far the worst debut in Pixar’s 28-year history.”

However, others think making more sequels might not make Pixar as much money as they’re hoping for.

ComingSoon.net asked if sequels are really “the best way to make more magic,” adding, “Sooner or later, the creative well is going to run dry if it’s only drawing up the same things.”

Whether Pixar decides to make more TOY STORY or INCREDIBLES movies, or if they create original stories, the studio would do well to remember that their biggest box office winners are the movies with positive moral lessons. Hopefully Pixar will keep this in mind as they move forward.
