Prime Video’s Upcoming NHL Docuseries Gives ‘Unprecedented Access’ to Top Players

By Movieguide® Contributor

Prime Video has just acquired the rights to a new NHL docuseries that will include “unprecedented access” to the League’s top players and teams.

Per the NHL, “The series will feature in-depth interviews with key players, their rivals and those in their closest inner circle – teammates, coaches, and family. The series will also reveal what life on-and-off the ice is really like for the league’s top players. From the quiet reflective moments to the speed and intensity of being on hockey’s biggest stage – revealing the talent, grit, and sacrifice it takes to make it in the NHL.”

Some of the players the series will follow include Connor McDavid, Matthew Tkachuk, Jacob Trouba, Leon Draisaitl, David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, Quinn Hughes, Jack Eichel, William Nylander, Filip Forsberg, Gabriel Landeskog and more.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that “Prime Video has exclusive NHL rights in Canada, and this series will complement that, though it will also be available in the U.S. and globally.”

Paul Martin, co-founder of Box to Box Films, who will also be the executive producer of the series, said, “We want to stay true to the world of ice hockey with the series. The sport is as beautiful, skillful and graceful, as it is brutal, pressurized and powerful; and we aim to balance the energetic and fast-paced action leading up to the Stanley Cup Final, with the quiet and raw drama taking place off the ice.”

“This is so meaningful for our league,” added Steve Mayer, NHL chief content officer and senior executive VP. “Box to Box has revolutionized modern storytelling for Formula 1, golf and tennis. With the full support of the League, players, coaches and owners, we welcome the opportunity to showcase our stars and the greatest season and postseason in sports — the Stanley Cup Playoffs — to a global audience.”

“This generation of NHL superstars are modern day gladiators unlike anything ever seen before, with big personalities and even bigger play makers, and we have the perfect partners to capture that energy for an unparalleled sports docuseries,” Shaun Alperin, head of content, Prime Video, Canada, stated. “Working with Box to Box Films and NHL Productions we cannot wait to bring to the screen the passion, the intensity, and the sheer excitement of the road to the Stanley Cup final, revealing what fans have only speculated goes on behind the scenes of the world’s fastest team sport.”

Movieguide® previously reported on NHL star Matt Duchene:

The Dallas Stars are in the middle of the Western Conference Finals in hopes of winning the Stanley Cup, but player Matt Duchene is relying on more than his skills to get him through the playoffs.

In an Instagram post shared by Christhlete, Duchene said, “There’s no one greater than Jesus, and there’s no one that has your life and plan in their hands other than Him.”

To get to the Western Conference Finals, the Stars went into a second overtime. Duchene was the one who secured the winning goal to help his team advance.

But he hasn’t always had success on the ice.

“[God is] giving me the tools, and He’s still giving me the tools and the lessons to achieve those things,” Duchene began to say on a 2022 episode of the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “He’s still giving [despite] everything I’m going through right now.”
