Steph Curry Earns Finals MVP After Championship Victory: ‘God Is Great’

By Movieguide® Staff

On June 16, 2022, the Golden State Warriors won their 4th NBA Championship since 2015, defeating the Boston Celtics 103-90.

Stephen Curry, who joined the Warriors in 2009, earned his first Finals Most Valuable Player award and his fourth Championship alongside his longtime teammate Klay Thompson. Their proficiency in shooting three-point field goals earned the pair the nickname “The Splash Brothers.”

Curry’s 34-point performance helped the Warriors win the best of 7 series, 4-2.

Despite his MVP performance, Curry glorified God and expressed his gratitude.

“I’m so proud of our group. I thank God every day I get to play this game at the highest level with some amazing people,” Curry told ESPN after the win. “We know this is what it’s all about — playing for a championship and what we’ve been through the last three years. Beginning of the season, nobody thought we’d be here except everybody on this court right now. It’s amazing. Very surreal, though. Very surreal.”

In the post-game press conference, Curry dubbed down on his thankfulness to God.

“God is great,” he told reporters. “The ability to be able to be on this stage and play with amazing teammates against a great Boston Celtics team that gave us everything [they had] to try to get to the finish line, this one hits different for sure. … It’s special. Just all the work that went into it, all the faith and belief, and everybody in that locker room that’s getting to spray champagne around that locker room, everybody mattered in that process.”

Curry has been outspoken about his Christian faith since his first Championship win in 2015, which propelled him into the spotlight.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Over the years in the limelight, Curry has not shied away from professions of faith in Christ. As a seasoned believer, Curry gave his life to Christ when he was in the fourth grade and continues to verbally affirm Christ in public settings. In fact, during various points in his basketball games, fans often see Curry pointing up toward the sky- his signature display of recognition for God. This same gesture is one that even his younger fans take notice of and has become one of homage to the player.

In the same way, during press conferences, Curry often makes mention of how God deserves all the glory for his accomplishments, both on and off the court. In 2015, Curry was named the MVP for NBA for the 2014-2015 and spoke directly of his gratitude to God; “First and foremost, I have to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for blessing me with the talents to play this game, a family to support me day in and day out…. I am his humble servant right now, I can’t say it enough, how important my faith is to how I play the game.”
