Christian artist TobyMac says reading the Bible helped him to grow closer to God and know Him “in ways that I never knew before.”

“I opened up my Bible a few days after Truett passed, and I looked at God and said, ‘I’m gonna give You a chance. I’m gonna give You a chance to make this okay,’” he told Focus on the Family, referring to the tragic loss of his son, who died at 21.

TobyMac continued, “So, I just continued reading the Bible. And I’ve been a Christian since I was 13, but reading the Bible cover to cover has changed my life. I’ve gotten to know God in ways that I never knew before. He’s shown me just how kind He is.”

The singer spoke further about this time in his life during a recent concert, telling the audience that focusing on scripture helped him through his son’s death.

“What I’ve been hanging on to with everything in me for the last six-and-a-half years is this: God promises that if you have a relationship with Him, He will never leave you or forsake you,” he said, via ChurchLeaders. “You see, God didn’t promise us that we wouldn’t be hurt on this earth. He didn’t promise us that our hearts would not be broken. He didn’t promise us that we wouldn’t lose the ones that we love. What He promised is that He would never leave.”

TobyMac continued, “And I can only tell you this from my own personal experience: He was there in the deepest of valleys. And if He was there for me, He will be there for you, just like He promised, ‘cause He’s God.”

“It wasn’t always easy for me to find Him,” he finished. “Sometimes I had to wait. I had to wait a long time to get real quiet. But He was there. He didn’t leave. He remained, faithfully.”

The Christian artist continues to keep Truett’s legacy alive through the Truett Foster Foundation, which provides college funding for young people in need.

“Through this, the foundation plants seeds that grow into lives of purpose and lasting impact,” the foundation’s web page reads. “Through this work, Truett’s legacy lives on — investing in the next generation and helping them become all they were created to be.”

TobyMac’s recent words are a reminder of the power of God’s word and how it can help us through even the toughest times.
