TobyMac Encourages Us To Communicate With God: ‘If I Ain’t Talking To God, He’s Not Talking To Me’

TobyMac Encourages Fans To Seek God: ‘If I Ain’t Talking To God, He’s Not Talking To Me’

At a recent concert, TobyMac (real name: Toby McKeehan) opened up about his grieving process after the tragic loss of his son, Truett in 2019.

The singer said, following such a powerful loss, he “didn’t have the heart” to read the Bible. After a few weeks, McKeehan said he spoke to God, telling him, “I’m going to give you a chance.”

“Imagine telling the God of all creation, ‘I’m gonna give you a chance,’” McKeehan said, adding, “See, to have a relationship with anyone, you gotta be talking to them, and they gotta be talking to you. You gotta be listening to them, and they gotta be listening to you.”

He continued, “The way God talks to us is through his Word. And the way we talk to Him is through prayer. So the way I see it, if I ain’t talking to God, He’s not talking to me. Do I really have a relationship with Him at all?”

McKeehan encouraged others who were struggling in their relationship with God to keep speaking to Him and reading the Bible.

“There’s some beautiful things that come with having a relationship with God,” the singer explained. “One of those things I’ve been hanging on to with everything in me for the past three years, and that is this: God promises that if you’ve have a relationship with him, he will never leave you or forsake you.”

Movieguide® previously reported on how TobyMac handled his grief following Truett’s death:

Christian artist TobyMac recently shared how his perspective on grief and eternity changed after his son, Truett Foster McKeehan, died of a drug overdose in 2019.

In a video from JOY FM, TobyMac said that grief motivated him to think more deeply about eternity and his relationship with God.

“I spoke about eternity before, but I never really thought about it deeply … because I didn’t need to,” he said. “I always trusted God. I always walked with God. It’s not a question of that.”

But his perspective shifted when Mckeehan died of an accidental overdose at the age of 21. TobyMac said that he was thankful for the support from fans worldwide amid what he confesses to being his first real experience with grief.

“The truth is, I didn’t know grief, really,” he said. “I just felt like everything was beautiful and perfect until the last few years. And then, when we lost Truett, everything changed and I met grief in the fiercest way.”

The artist continued, “I don’t know if I’ll ever laugh as deeply. I don’t know if I’ll ever smile as big. But I can smile and I can laugh. God doesn’t always take away the cold. He promises that He’ll be right there in it with us. That’s what I held on to. And I found Him there, or He found me there. I didn’t know God stayed close in those times, but I’ve learned that He does. I really have.”
