Nathan Fillion revealed that a FIREFLY reboot is in the works, sharing his plans to create the upcoming series as an animated continuation of the early 2000s show.

“As of this moment, the word is out. We are going to try to bring back FIREFLY. And this time, we’re gonna animate it,” Fillion shared on Instagram. “Is bringing back FIREFLY crazy or not crazy?…Now, to do this, we would need, Joss’ blessing: I got it. The rights from 20th Century Fox/Disney: They got excited, they said yes. [A] showrunner: I got two; Tara Butters – AGENT CARTER, DOLLHOUSE – Marc Guggenheim – ARROW, FLASH. They’re married, they met through FIREFLY. A script: We got it. An animation house: Academy and Emmy award-winning ShadowMachine. The last piece we need is a home. And for that, we need you…I’m asking you to do what you’ve always done. Keep FIREFLY flying. Oh, and I’m about to go pitch this thing, so wish me luck.”

FIREFLY followed a renegade crew aboard the ship Serentiry, who lived on the outskirts of society in the far future. The show only ran for one season but boasts a cult following, receiving a movie continuation of the series in 2005. A portion of Movieguide®’s review of the movie, SERENDIPITY, reads:

The irritable but good hearted captain takes care of his friends and wants to see justice prevail. Further, a brother is fiercely loyal to his sister, neglecting his personal life to make sure she stays safe. Mixed in with these good aspects are some anti-biblical and false religious elements, however, that will confuse young viewers. The violence can be a little intense, but foul language and sexual references are happily minor. SERENITY moves quickly and is never boring, but use discernment if you choose to see it.

The original cast of FIREFLY remained friends 20 years later, and many seem to be poised to return for the animated series if it gets a green light. Alongside Fillion, the cast included Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite and Adam Baldwin.

Fillion’s production company, Collision33, which he launched at the beginning of 2024, will produced the reboot.

“I am incredibly excited about expanding my relationship with Lionsgate. eOne [which Lionsgate acquired in December] has been a tremendous partner with Michelle and me on THE ROOKIE and THE ROOKIE: FEDS,” Fillion told Deadline at the time. “This partnership represents a remarkable opportunity to tell meaningful stories and create content that resonates with viewers across the globe.”

“We are committed to nurturing creativity and supporting emerging and established talent,” Fillion’s longtime partner Michelle Chapman added. “Our goal is to amplify and champion artists’ voices in the industry, fostering an environment where groundbreaking ideas can thrive.”

FIREFLY fans would certainly love a reboot, but only time will tell if the show can find a studio to actually bring the project to fruition.
