Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Jason McCourty knows keeping the faith in the NFL isn’t easy, but thankfully God put people in his life to keep him grounded in Himself.
“It’s been ups and downs, you know, as you’re transitioning when you get to the league,” McCourty shared on Sports Spectrum’s podcast. “Now, it’s a different set of circumstances around you. Now, how do you figure out who you are? How do you keep God first? And all of those are always a struggle, and I always credit that time, whether it was chapel before a game, whether it was Monday chapel after meetings, like, there were so many touch points.”
Along with corporate times of spiritual connection, people in his path kept the athlete grounded in God.

“Reggie was our team chaplain when I was in Tennessee; he married my wife and myself,” he continued. “Like, God, I think for me, has always placed people in my life that have always been there, like, as a reminder. Like, sometimes you feel like you’re starting to fade away, and then the next thing you know, I got to New England. I met a guy, Jack Easterbee, and you go on here, have a conversation, and you start to talk, and sometimes it’s revealing to yourself.”
“It’s like, ‘Man, I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do. I’m not being who I said I want to be.’ I remember going to Miami, and the first day I got there, I meet with the player development guy, Caleb Thornhill, and he’s a guy of strong faith, and we talked for two hours, and…I’m just going there to sign my contract and do a physical, and we just hit it off, and that’s what I mean. There’s just always been people there to pull you back in,” McCourty explained.

McCourty played 12 seasons in the NFL and was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans. He then moved to the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and finally the Miami Dolphins, where he ended his career. McCourty’s twin brother, Devin, played for the Patriots at the same time as him. The brothers became the first set of twins to play and win a Super Bowl.
Now, McCourty is an analyst for the NFL.
McCourty’s experience as a Christian in the NFL serves as a powerful reminder that God brings people into our lives who will help us stay close to Him.
