SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE Profits Surpass OPPENHEIMER, ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Combined
By Movieguide® Contributor
BARBIE, ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE and OPPENHEIMER may have gotten a lot of attention last year, but Teddy Bear Award® winner THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE accomplished something major—it has more profits than OPPENHEIMER and ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE combined.
“Now, not only is THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE the highest-grossing Illumination film ever, raking in a whopping $1.36 billion worldwide, but it’s also the most profitable, pocketing a cool $559 million profit in earnings. With its domination extending beyond the video game sector to the realm of movies, this success goes to show just how iconic and enduring this franchise truly is,” FandomWire reported.
In comparison, ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE brought in $328m while OPPENHEIMER earned $201.9m. SUPER MARIO BROS. also crushed WONKA, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3 and THE ERAS TOUR. It almost caught up to BARBIE, which earned $1.45b globally.
Movieguide® reported on the movie’s success in May of last year:
SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIES already sailed to the No. 1 released film of 2023 in the world. However, reaching $1 billion means that the film is the biggest animated title in the world since 2019. In addition, the film is Universal’s No. 3 biggest animated creations of all time sitting just behind MINIONS and DESPICABLE ME 3
A couple of reasons for SUPER MARIO BROS.’ triumph can be credited to its family-friendly theme and moral messages of love, right and wrong, brotherhood and sacrifice.
Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:
THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE (2023) has a strong moral message about brotherhood, sacrifice, and working together to overcome evil. The movie has breathtaking animation that honors its iconic source material while breathing new life into the large cast of characters from both Mario video games and other Nintendo games of the same universe. For Mario and Luigi, love for one another helps them overcome their deepest fears and stand up against Bowser and his army of Koopas, Goombas, and Piranha Plants. Due to some intense animated action/violence, Movieguide® advises caution for younger children.
With so much success, a sequel seems to be on the horizon for Illumination Studio.
Screen Rant reported on March 11, “Nintendo and Illumination have officially announced another MARIO movie is on the way, but they are reticent to describe it as a sequel. Revealed in a video on March 10, which has been dubbed Mario Day, the project was described by Nintendo Executive Shigeru Miyamoto as a “broadening” of Mario’s world.”
“Because of the family-friendly nature of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, no major twists or turns happened with the cast, meaning the entire ensemble could return for the sequel. That means fans could expect to see Chris Pratt back as Mario, while Anya Taylor-Joy could be back as Princess Peach,” Screen Rant said.
The new MARIO BROS. movie is set to premiere on April 3, 2026.
