Diego Luna will join the Disney live-action TANGLED cast in a new role made just for the movie.
The movie will start filming in June with Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider. Kathryn Hahn will play Mother Gothel, Screen Rant reported. Luna is known for his role in Disney+’s ANDOR. It’s unclear what his role is in TANGLED, ScreenRant said.
Kristin Burr, who produced 2021’s live-action CRUELLA, will produce under her Burr! Productions banner. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will pen the script alongside Michael Montemayor. Micheal Gracey will direct.
The original animation of TANGLED made over $591 million.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of the animation reads, “TANGLED is beautifully made, funny, exciting, delightful, and touching, especially the second half. The 3D is used to good effect without becoming overbearing. A moral conflict is not completely resolved, however.”

“In a way, Rapunzel rebels against the woman she thinks is her mother. Also, magic is a major plot point, but there’s a sacramental quality to it and some of the dialogue and images,” it continues. “Taken overall, this sacramental quality gives TANGLED strong redemptive symbols pointing metaphorically to Christian teachings.”
GWW reported the new movie is expected to mostly stick to the main story of Rapunzel discovering her true identity outside of the tower, with Flynn’s help. It’s also expected to be a musical, like the original.
Hahn’s role was just confirmed on March 10. She let fans know about the role in a creative social media video that Disney shared.
“Hey! Uh, OOTD, just found out what that stands for,” the actress said. “So here’s my outfit of the day!”
The camera focused on her Mother Gothel t-shirt.
The caption of the video, reads, “You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action TANGLED.”
The star transitioned her Instagram bio to say, “Mother knows best 🪞.” Her username is also now “motherhahn.”
Manheim, known for his experience in the musical JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM and the Disney ZOMBIES franchise, previously shared that he’s nervous to play such a well-known role.
“I really respect Flynn in this movie, it’s one of my favorites. I’m kind of just nervous because I know that everybody loves Flynn and I’m trying to do my best at satisfying what people are expecting. But in another way, I can only be true to myself and try to embody the spirit of the cartoon,” he said.
It hasn’t yet been revealed when we can expect to see TANGLED live-action in theaters, but it’s possible it could have a 2027 release date at the earliest.
