Dr. Baehr Continues Six-Day Speaking Tour in Perth, Australia

Redeeming the Mass Media:

Family Values Advocate Ted Baehr Continues Six-Day Speaking Tour

Engagement to Perth, Australia This Weekend

Hollywood, Calif. – Family and child advocate Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and chairman of the Christian Film & Television Commission®, finishes a six-day speaking tour to Perth, the capital of Western Australia, this weekend.

The goal? To transform the culture by redeeming the values of the mass media according to biblical principles.

“Our strategy is very effective and involves two prongs,” Dr. Baehr said.

“First, we try to encourage professionals in the mass media to put Christian content in their work and to adopt higher standards using traditional biblical values honoring faith, family, and western civilization. Second, we try to inform and equip the public, especially families, about the effects of the mass media on their children and grandchildren and about the practical tools they can use to accentuate the positive effects and counteract the negative effects of the media.”

Dr. Baehr pointed out, “The mass media creates the culture that shapes the hearts and minds of children and adults. Even Rush Limbaugh said Friday that it’s the media that controls the direction of the culture. Vice President Joe Biden said pretty much the same thing a few months ago.”

Since the Commission began its work in 1985, the number of positive movies marketed to children and families and the number of movies with overt, positive Christian content and characters has exploded. Even mainstream blockbusters like “Marvel’s The Avengers” are including positive references to God, religious faith, and biblical stories.

Thursday in Perth (Wednesday in the U.S.), Dr. Baehr spoke to the Dawson Society for Philosophy and Culture in the suburb of Northbridge on the impact of the entertainment media on virtue. The Dawson Society is named after historian Christopher Dawson, author of “Religion and the Rise of Western Culture” about the positive impact of Christianity on European civilization and ideals in the Middle Ages.

The next night, in the suburb of Glendalough, Dr. Baehr spoke to several civic groups, including the National Civic Council of Australia, about the mass media’s influence on today’s culture.

Yesterday, Dr. Baehr spoke at Vose Seminary in Bentley, a suburb of Perth, on his book “The Culture-Wise Family:  Upholding Christian Values in a Mass Media World.” After that, he spoke in Armadale, a city near Perth, on the same topic.

Today (Sunday in Australia), he wraps up his Australian tour with a sermon at the Champion Lakes Christian Church in Kelmscott, a suburb of Perth located in Armadale.

“The response to our talks has been fabulous,” Dr. Baehr said, noting that all copies of “The Culture-Wise Family” have been sold out during the trip. “We’re making great headway in redeeming the values of the media and helping families protect their children from its negative effects.”

Author also of “The Media-Wise Family,” Dr. Baehr is chairman of the Christian Film & Television Commission® (CFTVC) ministry and publisher of its family guide to movies and entertainment, Movieguide® (www.movieguide.org). CFTVC and Movieguide® are an international non-profit ministry, advocacy group, and watchdog dedicated to “redeeming the values of the entertainment industry by influencing industry executives and by informing and equipping the public about the influence of the entertainment media.”

Every year, CFTVC and Movieguide® host the Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry in Hollywood to honor the most family-friendly, inspiring movies and television programs with Christian, biblical content and values. The Report to the Entertainment Industry is a comprehensive financial examination of the content in the Top 250 Movies each year. Using rigorous, objective statistical methods, it shows that moviegoers prefer family-friendly movies and movies with strong, overt Christian, biblical content and references.
