Tensions Mount at ‘RUST’ Doc Screening

A Hulu documentary about the story of Halyna Hutchins has come under questioning about why it doesn’t say as much about the cinematographer as some would hope.
Hutchins died tragically on the set of RUST in 2021, when Alec Baldwin accidentally shot her.
The documentary titled, LAST TAKE: RUST AND THE STORY OF HALYNA HUTCHINS is set to premier March 11th. It is directed by Rachel Mason, produced by Julee Metz, and executive produced by Matthew Hutchins, widow of Halyna Hutchins.
In a Q&A after the screening of the film last Tuesday, Joel Souza, who was shot by the same bullet that killed Hutchins, shared his thoughts.
“I hoped it might have a little more Halyna in it or been a little more about Halyna,” he said. “I know that was your original intention when you talked to me about it. And I could tell when we would talk over the years in the intervening time that you were under some pressure.”
Metz responded to the critique by sharing the thought process behind the story.
“Rachel had a very clear vision in the beginning to tell Halyna’s story of her life and her work and some of her death, of course, because that’s where the story began. But over time, and as we gained new partners on this project, it became clear that there was a commercial value to the story of Rust. And that needed to be part of the story that we had to tell. So it became less about Halyna’s life and more about her death, but that’s what we ended up having to do.”
The RUST shooting has been the center of much controversy. In an episode of the new reality series THE BALDWINS, the actor and his wife Hilaria shared the impact it has had on their family.
