THE KING OF KINGS proves, once again, that biblically based films always win. The animation from the Korean studio Mofac Studio just surpassed Oscar winner PARASITE as highest-grossing Korean film of all time in the US.
Currently THE KING OF KINGS has grossed over $59 million at the worldwide box office and $55 million domestically. The 2019 PARASITE fell below this, earning $53.8 million domestically.
THE KING OF KINGS, based on a short story by Charles Dickens, sees Dickens tell his young son Walter about Jesus and the gospel as they explore the most important parts of Jesus’ ministry.
“Walter and his cat have just destroyed Dickens’ performance of Scrooge before a large London audience. Walter’s mother suggests that her husband tell Walter a story to help him understand why his behavior was wrong,” Movieguide®’s review reads. The review continues:
THE KING OF KINGS is a terrific, powerful way to introduce children to the story of Jesus in a way they can understand, through the dynamics of the Dickens family. In real life Charles Dickens was ambiguous about his Christian faith. However, there’s something exciting and special about the movie’s historical, Dickensian way of telling the story rather than other animated versions that use children or animals. THE KING OF KINGS is an excellent, acceptable version of the Gospel for children aged six and up.
THE KING OF KINGS surpassed PARASITE, which Movieguide® ranked at a -4 and said has a “a bitter, hopeless nihilistic streak,” just three weeks after its April 11 release.
The animation boast stars like Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman and Forest Whitaker.
The film was reportedly created on a $15 million budget, so it has far surpassed its anticipated profit. In addition to surpassing PARASITE, it has also become the second-biggest Angel Studios film to date.
“Built on faith, fueled by community, and created to honor the King of Kings! 👑” THE KING OF KING’s Instagram declared of the movie.
People in the comment section shared their love for the film. “My kid just loved this movie!!! It’s amazing!!!” one fan said. Another person commented, “I enjoyed this film! Lovely.”
“The Angel Guild picks winners. Angel’s revolutionary idea is simple: know your audience — and listen to them,” Angels Global Head of Theatrical Distribution & Brand Development Brandon Purdie said of the film’s success.
He added, “The CinemaScore for THE KING OF KINGS says it all. The film is one of only 128 films to achieve an A+ CinemaScore, and only the 5th animated film to hold that title that isn’t a Pixar/Disney production. Families want quality films to see together in theaters. This weekend simply reflects what audiences are craving.”
THE KINGS OF KINGS success is a reminder that audiences desire wholesome stories that are safe for the whole family, and if it shares the most important message of all time, that’s even better.
