TWISTERS Star Actually Went Storm Chasing to Prep for Role

Daisy Edgar-Jones went storm chasing to prepare for her role in TWISTERS.

“It was amazing,” the British actress told TODAY of the experience. “When we went, I was like gosh, we really captured it. A lot of it is really trying to make, like really quick decisions. A lot of it is instinct, you know, obviously you use the science and the data, but a lot of it is just trusting your gut.”

Edgar-Jones stars as “A retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist [who] is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies.”

Though not a sequel, the movie takes inspiration from the 1996 movie TWISTER, and viewers should keep an eye out for several easter eggs. “There’s a lot of love for the original in our film, it does feel like the next chapter in a really lovely way,” Edgar-Jones said. “We have Dorothy in there, we have other little easter eggs for those who love the original.”

TWISTERS director Lee Issac-Chung previously told Variety that he and his team rented out a theater to watch the original movie.

“We rented out the theater,” Chung said. “It was a very loud theatrical experience where we were all laughing, people were shouting [their favorite lines], and afterwards, you heard people saying, ‘Jami Gertz got robbed. Poor Melissa!’”

He continued, “I was just trying to honor that first film and those elements that I love about it, but also to try to let this be something that is coming from me and the things that enliven me, and the choices that that I believe in. The producers were all about that, telling me, ‘Make ‘TWISTERS’ as though this is your film and don’t worry too much about that original.’ I found that to be very liberating.”

The film spun into theaters on July 19 and has already broken some major records. The domestic opening of the film earned $80.5 million and is now the “top domestic opening ever for a natural disaster film.” The Hollywood Reporter said, “It’s also the third biggest start of the year to date behind INSIDE OUT 2 ($154.2 million) and DUNE: PART TWO ($82.5 million) after edging out GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE ($80 million).”

It’s success doesn’t come as surprise, thanks to its moral, redemptive story. Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

TWISTERS is a big, crowd-pleasing adventure romance. Kate is a young guilt-ridden tornado expert. She has a groundbreaking scientific idea about making tornadoes dissipate. However, she makes a mistake judging one tornado’s strength, and three of her friends die. Five years later, Javi, her team’s other survivor, asks Kate to return to Oklahoma. He needs her to help him use a new advanced radar system to track and measure tornadoes. On her first day back home, she meets Tyler, a cocky, thrill-seeking storm chaser. They begin a complicated rivalry that develops in fun, unexpected ways. Soon, however, everyone finds himself squarely in the deadly path of multiple storms.

TWISTERS is an outstanding adventure romance. It has appealing characters, powerful drama and funny moments with lots of heart. The music is wonderful. The storm scenes are intense, harrowing and exciting. TWISTERS has a strong moral, redemptive story about helping people, saving lives and making sacrifices. It also has a positive view of people living in the American heartland. However, TWISTERS has some foul language and scary moments. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
