What Parents Need to Know About Netflix’s New Kids Feature
By Movieguide® Contributor
Netflix recently announced plans to implement automatic playlists for kids’ content.
MSN reported that Netflix “will make new playlists of popular kids shows that automatically play a new episode available to customers in the next week or so.”
These playlists will take Netflix one step closer to “the world of FAST [free, ad-supported streaming television] which has recently become commonplace in the streaming world,” What’s On Netflix reported, a move that Disney+ has already made. Movieguide® previously reported:
Disney+ has added a new component to its platform in an effort to compete with other streaming services — live channels.
The steamer recently started rolling out a selection of live channels. Each one is centered around a specific show or theme. Users can play a new episode on demand or simply put the channel on and watch. For now, the live channels are limited to ad-free Disney+ Premium subscribers, according to MSN.
Disney announced the roll-out earlier this year, choosing to refer to them as “playlists,” as opposed to live channels.
“Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+,” Disney+ president Alisa Bowen said in a statement about the move. “Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.”
As of now, there are only two live channels available to viewers — ABC News Live and Disney Junior.
Netflix has revealed nine playlists so far, all with a different theme and made up of four to six different titles: ABC Playlist, Animal Playlist, Bedtime Playlist, Birthday Playlist, Dinosaur Playlist, Math Playlist, Music Playlist, Science Playlist and Truck Playlist.
The collections include popular shows like GABBY’S DOLLHOUSE, OCTONAUTS, PEPPA PIG and PJ MASKS.
For parents who are nervous about inappropriate content playing after a playlist is done, don’t worry!
The Streamable reported that “all of the lists will be rated TV-Y7, so parents don’t have to worry about an episode of a show like BRIDGERTON or STRANGER THINGS sneaking in there.”
